Alan Marshall failed to declare seven bank accounts containing £66,600, which, over the period of his claim increased to £164,700.
All the while, he claimed council tax benefit from Broxbourne Council and pension credit from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
A joint investigation between the council and the DWP uncovered the savings.
Marshall appeared at St Albans Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday last week (July 29) and pleaded guilty to two breaches of the Social Security Administration Act 1992 and was sentenced to 80 hours of unpaid work in the community.
He was also ordered to pay £85 costs and £60 victim surcharge.
Broxbourne Council has recovered the council tax overpayment – amounting to £7,254 – in full and the DWP is arranging for the recovery of £16,862 of overpaid pension credit.
